Freedom: Humboldt Debates in
Cooperation with Mercator Foundation
The ‘Humboldt Debates’, organized in
cooperation with the Stiftung Mercator, are highlights of the
anniversary program. They will centre round questions arising from the
need to think seriously about the future of universities as institution
of higher education and research. Scientists, scholars as well as
university administrators from all over the world will gather at our
university to discuss the most recent trends in the development of this
time-honored institution.
This year, ‘The Young Academy’ at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities’ together with the German Academy of Natural Sciences ’Leopoldina’ will hold their annual competition for the best paper by a student or junior researcher on the topics of these debates. The winner will participate in one of the panel discussions to present and defend his or her findings.
The cooperation partner, the Mercator Foundation, is one of Germany’s largest private foundations. Its primary mission is to initiate and support projects that promote tolerance and encourage understanding. The ‘Humboldt-Streitgespräche’ will underscore the foundation’s commitment to the institutional development of universities and the entire academic system in Germany.
Topics for the debates will be:
I. Where are we going? Promising Future Research Topics.
II. How shall we work? The Future of Scientific Community and
Society.
III. How will we teach and learn? The Future of Academic Studies.
IV. How can we improve? The Future of Academic Institutions.
