Independence: "Art in the
Foyer"
In the aniversary year 2009/2010 a permanent
art exhibition will contextualise Karl Marx’s quote in the historic
main foyer of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The Karl Marx quote in the historic foyer
in the main building shines in a new artistic light.
The historical Entrée is clearly characterised by its 1950s period of origin. In 1953 Karl Marx’s quote was embossed in golden letters and mounted in the heart of the foyer:
"The philosophers have only interpreted the world in different ways - what matters is changing it".
We would like to take the oppurtunity of our 200th anniversary to discuss this inheritance.
The quote will be contextualised through art and the foyer will be cast in a new light.
A selective competition chose an artist to tackle Karl Marx’s quote, as well as taking into account the perception of such a monument as a kind of protected provocative sign. At the same time the quote is considered to be a symbol of the historical art in the foyer, which demonstrates tolereance and internal peace of a formerly divided country.
The jury panel was as follows:
1. Ulrike Brandi, Hamburg, Licht GmbH
2. Prof. Dr. Horst Bredekamp, HU Berlin, Kunstgeschichte
3. Regula Lüscher, Senatsbaudirektorin, Senatverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung Berlin
4. Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmidt, HU Berlin, Philosophie
5. Prof. Dr. h.c. Hartwig Piepenbrock, Piepenbrock Service GmbH & Co. KG
6. Prof. Peter Weibel, ZKM, Vorstand
On 27th Feburary the jury voted unanimously for the design by Ceal Floyer. Ceal Floyer.
