Future: “Humboldt’s Model. The Future
of Universities in the World of Research”
“Humboldt’s Model. The Future of Universities
in the World of Research” – under this title a large international
conference will bring together leading academics, politicians and
academic administrators to discuss the impact and enduring relevance of
the Humboldtian concept of a modern university.
The name "Humboldt" has become a synonym
for the modern (research) university.
The number of universities that were founded or reorganized themselves on the model designed by Wilhelm von Humboldt is very large. Even after 200 years Humboldt’s legacy is by no means lost. On the contrary, the international discussions about the future of the type of research based university whose characteristics are commonly summed up by the label ‘Humboldt’s model’, have recently gained in intensity. Countless controversial diagnoses of the present situation and the role of universities in a changed world have been produced. We believe that the alternatives, radical economizing or reaffirmation of autonomy, are too stark to leave room for appropriately rational debates and for finding adequate solutions for the future.
Therefore, the conference is designed to bring together national debates about the future of the different university systems, to examine the feasibility of the various proposals for making the universities fit for the challenges of the future and, if possible, to find constructive alternatives to the existing paradigms.
The conference will be prepared and organized by an interdisciplinary group of professors under the chairmanship of professors Bernd Henningsen, Jürgen Schlaeger and Elmar Tenorth. It is made possible by funds provided by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung.
